Coach's Note of 3/6/12

I wanted to say a quick hello to everyone and let you all know about our new scoring procedures.

Firstly well done to everyone who went to Georgia. Many came away with medals and personal best scores and I am sure all of you came away with more knowledge of yourself and our great sport and I hope you are eager to compete again. I am very proud of all of your results, as is everyone else at the facility. The next event will be the State indoor championships (9-11 March) if you haven't entered you best get in very fast!!!! And we have our last indoor event for the winter on the 30th of March, you can enter via our website

With so many JOAD's now in the Easton Newberry Complex it is now becoming a hefty task to keep track of all scores and we now have more people reaching red and above pin than ever before. To date we have only been completing single score sheets (one score sheets per person) for all our JOAD events. Effective immediately we will now be performing Double scoring for all our events (two score sheets per person).

Please be aware that the score card is an extremely important document. By signing each score card you are indicating that you agree with what is written above you. We suggest you take the time to ensure the following:

  • Your name is written in full (no nicknames or just first name)
  • Math is correct
  • Both score sheets are the same
  • You have a date on it
  • You have clearly written in your bow type, division, distance and target face size
  • You have written clearly and with good hand writing

Please remember YOU are responsible for all of the above and if your score card is not filled in properly you may find that your score card is not accepted and you may miss out on that next pin you are looking for or even worse, you may miss out on that precious medal for the event.

Again, well done to everyone and if you see Mrs Pogue be sure to thank her for all the work she does with our score sheets

I look forward to seeing you all shooting again soon.

Coach Robert Turner

Update 1/11/12

For any archery that is interested in seeing more archery, here are two of my favorite websites to visit:

http://dutchtarget.smugmug.com/

http://www.youtube.com/user/archerytv?blend=1&ob=4

The YouTube channel is the official videos of World Archery. Very fun to watch and will help you see the technique, determination, accuracy and equipment of the high level archers in the world. The Dutch target website is actually all the photos of World Archery's official photographer Dean Alberga of the Netherlands. He is paid to travel the world and take photos of archery…talk about a cool job :) look here to see archer’s technique from all around the world.

Update 12/19/11

NTS and its benefits

You all should know by now the system we use to teach people archery at the Easton Newberry sports complex is the NTS (formerly BEST) or National Training System. This system was designed by National Head Coach Ki Sik Lee and has taken years to develop. This system has been adopted by USA Archery and is now taught all over the country by certified coaches. This system promotes the use of your body in an efficient manner using biomechanics and larger muscle groups to reduce the likelihood of injury, make your bow more consistent and make the coaching of archery more consistent as well.

For more in-depth understanding of the NTS please be sure to look at the following websites for more information or you can also purchase one of the 2 books Coach Lee has produced titled: Total archery.

Tips on 12/7/11

Fitness Tip:

For archers physical fitness can help you with many aspects of your shooting. To enhance your performances and training think about adding cardio training sessions in the form of walking, running, bicycle riding or swimming, 3 times a week (minimum of 30 minutes per session) to see improvements in your strength, alertness, vitality and technique. (note: all physical exercise should be discussed with your USA Archery certified coach or your medical practitioner prior to commencement)

Hard Work:

I read this quote recently and found myself thinking about the archers of the ENSC, the Gator Cup athletes and the sport of archery in general.

"A dictionary is the only place where success comes before hard work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price." Vince Lombardi American Football Coach 1913-1970

Technical Tip:

The Stance is the first step in the National Training System (formally known as the BEST method) and is the foundation of the shot cycle as well as your body. Some great tips for a good stance are to wear appropriate footwear (tennis shoes or running shoes especially for safety), have your feet shoulder width apart, for best results put 60% of your weight on the balls of your feet and 40% on your heals.

Archery

Archery, like life, is a sport where hard work can be greatly rewarded. Archers across the globe spend endless hours training in front of a target perfecting their technique, fitness, mental game, knowledge of equipment etc. because they wish to better themselves. I believe that Coach Lombardi is correct, YOU can achieve ANYTHING you set out to achieve as long as you are willing to put some hard work into it.

******************

Safety Tip:

Pulling arrows from the target may seem like a simple enough task yet all archers should take great care in doing so to ensure that the range is as safe as possible. Where possible only one archer should pull arrows out of the target at a time. Place one hand on the target around the arrow you wish to pull. Place your other hand on the shaft of the arrow as close to the target as possible and grip tightly. Pull the arrow in the same plain in which it entered the target ensuring you do not pull it at an odd angle. Always ensure that behind you is clear when doing so.

GATOR CUP

I invite everyone to come and see the Gator Cup (April 19-21) and watch some of the worlds best archers compete at your very own local facility. Think of the hard work that they have given to get to the highest level. It IS possible for YOU to be this good.....with a little hard work.
